Duke Energy skilled volunteers helped Family Mankind choose Salesforce to help ensure sustainable growth, so that they can do more to prevent domestic violence and protect victims.
Family Mankind’s priority is keeping children and women safe. As a Family Violence Prevention Services Agency, they serve and advocate for vulnerable victims and survivors traumatized by violent behavior. They also work to end the cycles of trauma and abuse through Trauma Informed Care community violence intervention programs that train on social emotional intelligence learning factors, resiliency skillsets and economic development, while providing other wraparound services to prevent violence and assist victims.
The organization has more than tripled the number of people they serve over the past year (from 265 to 820) and need the right technology infrastructure to ensure nonprofit sustainability and continued high quality, effective service as demand continues to grow. They reached out to Apparo for support to select the best customer relationship management database for their organization and were matched to skilled volunteers from Duke Energy who assessed their needs, conducted marketplace research and helped them select Salesforce.

After the project was completed, we met with A.W. Burgess, Founder and Executive Director, to learn about the significance of this work and its anticipated impact.
“This is life and death work and we are doing a phenomenal job in Mecklenburg County. As a member of the state domestic violence commission, our services are demanded across the state, which raises the issues of scalability since we do not charge for our services. To ensure that we can deliver high quality service, we need to raise funds to train and pay more staff. To fundraise effectively, we need the right way to collect and access our data, so that I, our staff and Board can be empowered with numbers to tell our story. When I walk into a room with potential funders, I need answers to their questions.”
Currently, as A.W. shares, “We are in the ice age using Excel spreadsheets with thousands of rows. From an efficiency standpoint, it is a jigsaw puzzle. We need to be working smarter, not harder.” The spreadsheets used to capture data, create inefficiency and drive risk:
- Requires extensive manual labor to report on specific segments of their constituents
- Challenging to access numbers needed for storytelling purposes
- Vulnerable to data loss
With Salesforce, nonprofit sustainability will be ensured through key benefits
Salesforce will deliver:
- Easy access to data needed for fundraising/storytelling, program decision making and reporting to current and potential donors/funders
- Increased data security
- Ability to grow with their organization and adapt to changing needs
- Freed time to focus on building community relationships and for direct service
With Salesforce, A.W. is confident that Family Mankind will be well positioned to meet their goal of more than doubling their budget over the next two years, so that they can do the hiring and training needed to extend their reach and help more families overcome and avoid the impact of domestic violence.
“We did some research on our own before this project, but I know when I am out of my league. It was a blessing when Apparo came along. Now I’m confident that with the level of expertise that Apparo brought to the table, that we made the right choice that will lead to our long term sustainability. I’m not worried that we are going to spend our good money on something that we will grow out of.”
We look forward to working together with our Centric Consulting volunteers to support Family Mankind in implementing Salesforce as the next step.
